Chrome Music Lab: Song Maker

GML rhythm maker.jpg

This program is easy to use and allows you to build songs that are as simple or fancy as you like. You can dive in and get started or read below for some ideas/instructions.

Option One: Make up your own song!

Compose a brand new song from scratch and think of a name for your song. Make it as simple or complicated as you like.

  • *Tips: Try using short patterns that repeat (ostinatos) both in your melody and percussion.

  • If you use notes from the pentatonic scale, things tend to always sound nice together. Pentatonic scale notes: Red, orange, yellow, dark green, purple

Option two: Create an existing song!

I will give you a list of colours that correspond to the notes in Song Maker. You need to enter the notes in the correct order. The challenge will be spacing the notes correctly to create the rhythm of the song. Sometime they need to be right together, other times you need to leave space.  Use the playback future to listen to the song and make adjustments.

Musicplay is a Canadian music education program that our district subscribes to. Students can access songs, games and interactive activities on this site. I will be posting more in depth videos walking students through the different steps at a later date, but for now they are free to explore!

The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra is an interactive, web-based game where students travel through the jungle completing challenges in order to collect orchestral instruments in their respective families and complete the orchestra. The primary classes had been working their way through, doing a little bit more each week. It has been a huge hit with the kids! Unfortunately, we were unable to finish the game before Spring Break.
To play the game, I recommend clicking "register" and making an account this way you can start and stop as you like without needing to start at the beginning every time.
