Weekly Quiet Listening
How it works
The idea with a Quiet Listening is that one time per week for a few minutes, we make ourselves comfortable (lie down if you like!), turn off the lights, close our eyes, clear our minds of whatever is happening in our lives and enjoy some really beautiful music. Sometimes there is a focus or question for the listening, other times it's nice to just have a quiet moment and listen. I recommend minimizing your browser window after you start the recording as pictures or videos can be distracting. Enjoy!

Daniel Waples - Hang in Balance
May you acquaint yourself with the hang drum (aka handpan).

The hang drum is related to the steel pan drums that are used in the Caribbean, but has a different shape and is played without mallets. Different note are played by tapping the drum in specific places. The instrument has a magical sound!

Asturias by Isaac Albeniz
This recording is done by Ana Vidovic -one of the modern greats of classical guitar.

Asturias is a place in Spain. If you can, go look at a world map and find where Spain is in relation to Canada. This is the country that Albeniz (the composer of this song) is from.

Oscar Peterson - Hymn to Freedom
Oscar Peterson is known as one of the greatest jazz piano players of all time. I am also proud to say that he is Canadian.
This song is the anthem for Music Monday 2020. There are many vocal renditions of this song. But my favourite, is Oscar Peterson's original instrumental version shown here. Enjoy!

Lavinia Meijer - Metamorphosis
by Philip Glass

This is definitely a lights out, eyes closed and quiet your busy mind type of listening.

I don't want you to worry about a question for this one. But, you should know that the title, Metamorphosis, is defined as "a change of the form or nature of a thing or person into a completely different one".

Goat Rodeo Sessions - Attaboy
This is group is comprised of four world class musicians who are getting creative and mixing different genres of music in a truly unique way.

Task: Turn on the music and close your eyes. You are a mouse. A new day is starting and you are slowly tip-toeing your way out of your mouse hole. You see the most amazing ________. After this, the rest of the story is for you to imagine.

However, I suspect the rest of your story might be shaped in the following way:
- 1:36: You have a problem or something bad happens
- 2:07 You get an idea of what to do
- 2:35: You put your plan into action, it's going great!
- 3:04: You encounter another problem, it takes all your might to solve this problem
- 4:06: You're back to that wonderful thing you saw/did in the beginning
- 4:22: You stop to consider something sad about what has happened
- 4:44: Back to the wonderful thing you saw/did in the start

Jaron Freeman-Fox & the Opposite of Everything - Clarity
This Canadian group is based out of Toronto and led by my favourite fiddle player. I first watched them perform from the side of the stage at a music festival that I was also performing at. I was spellbound during their performance and have been a fan ever since. I hope it brings you some clarity in these strange times.

Question: There are two lead instruments in this piece. One is the fiddle (aka violin), what is the other one? What instrument family does it belong to?
